A San Diego family mourned the death of their relative, a motorcyclist who was killed in the intersection of Pacific Highway and Cedar Street in 2009. The intersection was well known for its accident prone nature, and had been reported multiple times to the city as unsafe over the last twelve years. During the lawsuit, attorneys argued that the intersection gave multiple drivers the illusion that they had the right of way, which was the most common cause of accidents in that area. The family pursued compensation from the city due to their failure to install a traffic light despite the multitude of accidents that occurred in that spot. The San Diego City Council unanimously awarded the family a 1.5 million dollar settlement for their loss.
